Over my career, I’ve done a lot of different things. While it looks like things aren’t connected, there are two things that have always been at my core: people and potential.
Whether it’s been patenting ideas and building new businesses or thinking about how to better innovate and internationalize at one of Japan’s top brain science institutes, the fundamental question has always been the same: What can I do to bring people together and push performance?
Over the last 10 years, most of this thinking has been done in the context of helping companies better understand themselves and their place in the world. Through Diligent Rocket, the strategic branding company I founded, I’ve had the pleasure of working with companies that want to take their performance to the next level.
What I also realized is that while it looks like I work for companies, I really work for leaders and their teams. And often, the line between building the company and developing the human potential of leaders and individuals within those companies becomes blurred. After all, how can you have a great company, with all the success metrics that go with it, and not have great people?
From those experiences, and the openness of many clients to share their personal stories of challenge and growth, I decided that part of what I could do to tap my own potential would be to figure out a format where I could help guide, not lead, others to build new paths of possibility for themselves. In other words, I’m interested in helping unleash the potential of leaders and those on their own transformation journeys.
My formal training early on was in finance and economics. From there, I received my MBA from McGill University, where I focused on innovation and organizational culture. I then went on to pursue my MFA in Design at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where I was fortunate to study under some great design minds like Milton Glaser, Stefan Sagmeister and Steven Heller, before dropping out to do a mobile phone-based startup around an idea I patented.
I continue to supplement with additional formal training, physical pursuits, and entrepreneurial ventures that push me to evolve and grow. From studies on innovation at MIT and training at the Human Potential Institute, to finishing an Ironman and cofounding a team that cracked the Top 10 for the Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE, I continue to believe in tapping my inner curiosity and pushing my own ideas of what is possible.
Happiness for me is the family I’ve been blessed with, the work and colleagues that continually help me rethink what is possible, and the realization that everyday is an opportunity to create, learn and grow.
